{"id":36056,"date":"2016-05-23T07:10:29","date_gmt":"2016-05-23T04:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.alassalah.com\/en\/?p=36056"},"modified":"2016-05-23T07:10:29","modified_gmt":"2016-05-23T04:10:29","slug":"researchers-determine-sex-unborn-foals-new-test","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.alassalah.com\/en\/2016\/05\/23\/researchers-determine-sex-unborn-foals-new-test\/","title":{"rendered":"Researchers determine sex of unborn foals with new test"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5 class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">by <span class=\"s3\">Eleanor Jones<\/span><\/span><\/h5>\n<p class=\"p4\"><span class=\"s1\">It is possible to find out the <b>sex of unborn foals<\/b> from as little as eight weeks after conception by testing mares\u2019 blood plasma, researchers have found.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">An Iranian team from Shahrekord University was able to determine the sex with a<\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b> good rate of accuracy<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> using a new technique.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The researchers developed a test used to detect circulating cell-free foetal DNA (ccfDNA) within the plasma of <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>pregnant Arab mares<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">They then identified the SRY gene, which is responsible for the initiation of <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>male sex determination<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">, within the DNA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">This information was used to <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>predict the sex of the foetus<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Peripheral blood samples were collected from each mare used in the study, on a single occasion, between <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>eight and 20 weeks after conception<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">. The researchers extracted the ccfDNA from 3ml of maternal plasma, using the new test to detect the SRY gene.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">Results for the gene were inconclusive from the first round of testing, researcher Ali Kadivar and his colleagues stated in their study, which has been published in the <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>Journal of Equine Veterinary Science<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> online.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">But <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>conclusive results<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> were obtained from a second round of testing, they said, from which the group was able correctly to predict the sex of 22 of the 25 unborn foals, an <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>accuracy rate of 88 per cent<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\">The group wrote: \u201cTo conclude, SRY gene can permit <\/span><span class=\"s3\"><b>detection of equine fetal sex<\/b><\/span><span class=\"s1\"> with a good accuracy by analysing cffDNA in maternal plasma just after 8 weeks of gestation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"p5\">src:\u00a0horseandhound.co.uk<\/h5>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Eleanor Jones It is possible to find out the sex of unborn foals from as little as eight weeks after conception by testing mares\u2019 blood plasma, researchers have found.
