It is possible to find out the sex of unborn foals<\/b> from as little as eight weeks after conception by testing mares\u2019 blood plasma, researchers have found.<\/span><\/p>\n

An Iranian team from Shahrekord University was able to determine the sex with a<\/span> good rate of accuracy<\/b><\/span> using a new technique.<\/span><\/p>\n

The researchers developed a test used to detect circulating cell-free foetal DNA (ccfDNA) within the plasma of <\/span>pregnant Arab mares<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

They then identified the SRY gene, which is responsible for the initiation of <\/span>male sex determination<\/b><\/span>, within the DNA.<\/span><\/p>\n

This information was used to <\/span>predict the sex of the foetus<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Peripheral blood samples were collected from each mare used in the study, on a single occasion, between <\/span>eight and 20 weeks after conception<\/b><\/span>. The researchers extracted the ccfDNA from 3ml of maternal plasma, using the new test to detect the SRY gene.<\/span><\/p>\n

Results for the gene were inconclusive from the first round of testing, researcher Ali Kadivar and his colleagues stated in their study, which has been published in the <\/span>Journal of Equine Veterinary Science<\/b><\/span> online.<\/span><\/p>\n

But <\/span>conclusive results<\/b><\/span> were obtained from a second round of testing, they said, from which the group was able correctly to predict the sex of 22 of the 25 unborn foals, an <\/span>accuracy rate of 88 per cent<\/b><\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The group wrote: \u201cTo conclude, SRY gene can permit <\/span>detection of equine fetal sex<\/b><\/span> with a good accuracy by analysing cffDNA in maternal plasma just after 8 weeks of gestation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
